I Took A Chance On Me

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Take a Chance on Me.”

What’s the biggest chance you ever took? Did it work out? Do tell!

I truly thought that 2015 would be THE YEAR to bring prosperity in my life.  I believed that it was finally my time to expand my career path, to have my life back on track, and finally to enjoy every moment of my life without financial worries.

But no, right after the new year, everything changed.

I lost my job due to corporate reduction (while this company hired several C level executives overseas few months ago to off-balance this cost).

All of my experience were with heritage luxury companies and jobs were dried up in this field due to rapid market change.  I felt hopeless, needed supports from my peers, but several of my past professional contacts never bothered to return my messages for any advices or leads.

Realized that I was stuck in a profession and not heading anywhere, I had to create my own opportunities to jump start a new career path for me.

I was always fascinated with social media and how its impact affects on business outcomes, social behaviors and people engagement.  So I went back to school for the first time in more than 20 years and studied Digital Marketing as a way to expand myself expertise.

Majority of my friends were supportive of this change, but some of them were skeptical.  One friend felt that I was too late in the game to focus on digital marketing with out any prior experience.  This feedback was hurtful but made me wanted to learn even more.

So, I took a chance on myself, but I had doubts about it throughout this humbling process.

I felt defeated often because there were so much new information to absorb and learn.  I was out of my comfort zone and wasn’t sure if this was the right thing for me to do.

But I DID TAKE a chance on myself.  If I didn’t, I wouldn’t able to re-create, Wang And The City, my personal blog and wrote, Shenanigans, for Blogging 101 to express my thoughts about this topic.

Because I took a chance on myself, I co-created, JPink Boutique, my e-commerce site featuring beautiful women’s accessories with everyone.

I am glad that I took a chance on myself eight months ago so I can re-learn everything about myself.  It is an on going process but I am happy with this progress and enjoyed every moment from it.  Perhaps I should also thank my previous employer for this.  Other wise, I would not have the courage to take on this chance to re-invent my self, (while coyly flipping the bird at them as my way to express gratitude).

  1. Charles, your JPink page is stunning. And as to age, redefine it! A group at our church, formerly called the Senior Saints, decided they weren’t seniors. They are now the J.O.Y. Club (Just Older Youth.) So, never let other people define who you are. And congratulations and best of luck in your new career.
