Lost in Taipei: Chapter 26

Nestled by the Tamsui River and gracing the shores of the Taiwan Strait, Tamsui, a charming seaside district in New Taipei City, embodies tranquility and historical richness. Tamsui, translating to “freshwater” in Chinese, was a pivotal contributor to Taiwanese history and culture since the 17th century.

Charlie rearranged his Friday work commitments to accompany Ming on this offsite trip to Tamsui. Intrigued by the town’s natural charm, Charlie was eager to explore the area, which boasted several riverside parks, open-air markets showcasing traditional handicrafts and street-stall snacks, a flourishing fisherman’s wharf, and a noticeable uptick in passenger ferries navigating the river and its adjacent areas.

“Thank you, Ming, for suggesting Tamsui. After a week stuck in the office, this is exactly what I needed. The fresh air and the change of scenery are perfect,” Charlie remarked, relishing the experience as they strolled leisurely through the bustling open-air market.

“I’m happy you could join me and glad to hear you needed this break. It’s a perfect day for walking around Tamsui; the weather is less humid now, and we can truly enjoy some outdoor activities,” Ming replied with a cheerful smile.

Their conversation paused as their eyes fell upon an elderly couple sitting at an outdoor stool by a street food vendor. The sight of the couple, their eyes etched with the wisdom of years, and their affection displayed a simple, unspoken language, caught their attention.

The older gentleman radiated a loving tenderness that transcended words. With each bite, he made sure his companion had ample to eat, sharing his food and carefully cutting it into manageable pieces for her. She, in turn, refilled his teacup with a gentleness and care that spoke volumes, her gaze never leaving his face.

Their subtle gestures spoke volumes of the deep love and connection they shared. It was as if they had a language of their own, one that needed no words. Every glance, every smile, and every act of service conveyed their unwavering affection for each other.

Ming, his voice soft and filled with emotion, broke the silence. “Charlie, one day, I hope to have a bond like that with someone special.” His gaze remained fixed on the elderly couple, moved by the profound love they had just witnessed.

Charlie, yearning for this affirmation, was deeply moved by Ming’s genuine expression. With a flutter in his heart, he turned to Ming and softly replied, ‘Me too.”

“I suppose you and I share something in common then,” Ming said with a smile.

Charlie smiled back at Ming and inquired, “Does Tamsui hold a special place for you? You seem very familiar with this area and know your way around.”

Charlie listened intently as Ming began to share his personal history. Ming’s tale mirrored Charlie’s in some surprising ways. Raised in Tamsui by his single father, Ming’s childhood had been molded by the tranquility of the riverside town.

“As much as I cherish Tamsui’s memories, my dad and I moved here when I was just a kid,” Ming explained, his eyes reflecting a mix of nostalgia and warmth. “Growing up, my dad became my hero. He worked tirelessly to provide for us, and even though life wasn’t always easy, he made sure I had everything I needed.”

Ming’s academic and athletic achievements were notable. Excelling in both realms, he earned a spot at the prestigious National Taiwan University in Taipei, studying management. During those years, Tamsui became a cherished reminder, a place he regularly tried to revisit and relive some of his childhood memories.

As Charlie and Ming wandered through Tamsui’s enchanting streets, the conversation seamlessly transitioned to their shared experiences of growing up with single parents and their profound impact on their lives.

“I never really thought I’d find someone who understands what it’s like to be raised by a single parent,” Charlie remarked, a bond growing between them.

Ming nodded, “It’s a unique journey, isn’t it? My dad was my pillar of strength, and I owe a lot to him. I can see that same strength in your eyes, shaped by the lessons from your mother, Charlie.”

As they explored the historic side of Tamsui, from its centuries-old temples to the nostalgic lanes that witnessed their own transformations, the connection between Charlie and Ming deepened.
