Lost in Taipei: Chapter 27

Deep Thoughts at Tamsui River

In the heart of Tamsui, Charlie and Ming continued their exploration, the quaint streets and traditional architecture offering a picturesque backdrop to their budding connection.

Ming pointed out significant landmarks as they wandered around the streets of Tamsui and found themselves at the entrance of a riverside park, the breeze carrying the scent of saltwater. Ming suggested they sit by the water’s edge, a perfect viewing spot around the bay.

Seated on a bench with the Tamsui River as their backdrop, Charlie couldn’t help but finally felt a sense of peace, a feeling foreign to him for quite some time. The soft ripples in the water, illuminated by the fading sunlight, set the stage for a more personal and intimate conversation.

Charlie soaked in this moment’s serenity and broke the silence between them, saying, “I almost forgot what it feels like to be so calm and peaceful. I think I could sit here and admire this beautiful view forever.”

Ming smiled, “Well, Charlie, you can have this moment forever if you choose to.”

Charlie turned to Ming slowly and replied thoughtfully, “Ming, have you ever felt trapped, unable to breathe freely? When I was in New York City, my days were consumed by work, and my nights were dedicated to caring for my ailing mother. It was an overwhelming experience, both mentally and physically draining.”

“I wasn’t complaining about caring for my mother; it was a responsibility I happily accepted. Creating a comfortable environment for my mom was important for me to make her final moments as pleasant as possible. It was a challenging time, but it was also a profound love and care experience for me,” Charlie reflected.

“Since coming to Taipei,” Charlie continued with deep thoughts, “the weight that burdened me has lifted. It’s hard to put into words, but for the first time, I can breathe freely. I miss my mother dearly, but knowing she’s in a place free from pain brings me solace. Being here has given me a freedom I didn’t know I needed,” Charlie shared, letting go of the bundled-up emotions he had carried for so long.

Ming listened attentively to Charlie’s honest words. After a brief silence, he responded genuinely, “Charlie, thank you for opening up to me. I understand how you feel about your mom. I lost my dad recently. He passed away due to a rare heart condition. I didn’t even have time to prepare for his death since it happened unexpectedly. However, grieving for a loved one is the same. I want you to know that you have me by your side in Taipei. I’m here to offer support whenever you need it.”

“Thank you, Ming. This means a lot to me. There’s something important I need to do—I need to spread my mom’s ashes in Chiayi City, her birthplace. Would you consider joining me on this trip if it’s not too much trouble for you?”

Ming looked at him with a warm smile, “Charlie, I’d be happy to accompany you to Chiayi City. Your mom must have been an incredible woman, and I’d love to be there for you.”

As they sat there, the atmosphere became even more charged with emotion. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the riverside park. The rippling waters of the Tamsui River mirrored the calmness that settled between Charlie and Ming.

Charlie turned to Ming, feeling deeply grateful, “Thank you, Ming.”

Ming reached out, gently placing a hand on Charlie’s. Their eyes met, and in that moment, something shifted. Ming leaned in, and Charlie reciprocated, their lips meeting in a tender kiss.
