Lost in Taipei: Chapter 30

Surprise. Surprise.

Every day, Charlie and Ming eagerly set out to explore the vibrant city of Taipei. Each new experience brought them closer together, and as Charlie delved deeper into his birth country’s diverse culture, Ming’s understanding of Charlie grew. Their bond strengthened.

On weekends, Ming took Charlie on tours to explore Taipei’s famous landmarks, exposing him to the city’s cultural heritage. During one of their excursions, they visited Jiufen, a renowned destination with a rich history, where they strolled through its intricate alleys and caught glimpses of traditional Taiwanese life. With Ming as their knowledgeable guide, they embarked on a sensory journey at the A-Mei Tea House, participating in the time-honored tradition of a traditional tea ceremony.

Ming recently planned a lovely outing for Charlie at the stunning Taipei Botanical Garden. They strolled leisurely amidst the towering plants, exotic blooms, and rare herbs, basking in the tranquil ambiance of the garden. They explored the serene Lotus Pond and wandered through the captivating Chinese Zodiac Garden, fully immersing themselves in the rejuvenating embrace of nature’s beauty.

With each passing day spent with Ming, Charlie shed layers of sadness and soaked in every moment of Taipei’s life. Their relationship flowed effortlessly, and with Ming, Charlie discovered a sense of authenticity that allowed him to be himself. Ming’s quirky jokes elicited genuine laughter, and Charlie felt at ease asking questions about Taiwan’s history without a hint of embarrassment with Ming.

An indescribable feeling settled over Charlie during his time in Taipei. There was a sense of belonging, as if he had found a place where he could be genuinely himself. The more he learned about the culture, interacted with the people, and embraced the simplicity of life in Taipei, the more the city, once unfamiliar, felt like a second home.

Another day unfolded at the office, with the usual hustle and bustle of colleagues engaged in their respective tasks. Ming was immersed in a sales meeting, planning strategies for success. Meanwhile, Xing and Wen discussed upcoming PR plans for a new clothing brand. Charlie was busy answering his team’s questions about his ongoing projects in New York. He provided insight into their progress and discussed details.

Amid the workday, Xing casually walked over to Charlie’s desk, a curiosity evident in his tone. “Hey Charlie, it’s hard to believe it’s been almost two months since you started working and living in Taipei. So, what’s the plan? Are you thinking of extending your stay in Taiwan? I must say, you and Ming seem to be hitting it off quite well.”

Charlie looked up at Xing and smiled, “Over two months already? Time does fly.”

Amused, Xing chuckled, “How could I forget, Charlie? You practically stepped into the office with that empty Starbucks cup and looked utterly lost on day one.”

Charlie laughed, “And let’s not forget how you tricked me into that dinner with Ming. I had no idea I’d spilled coffee on Ming earlier that day.”

Xing teased, “You should be thanking me for orchestrating that dinner. Look at you two now, all lovey-dovey. Sheesh.”

Their banter was interrupted when Xing noticed a stranger approaching, someone who stood out with a distinctly Western vibe. Taller and athletic, this mysterious visitor possessed striking Asian features, with high cheekbones and captivating almond eyes.

As the stranger reached them, he greeted Charlie warmly, “Hey Charlie, it’s been a long time. How are you?”

Charlie’s cheerful expression shifted suddenly as if he had just seen a ghost.

“What are you doing here, Alex?” Charlie couldn’t believe his eyes.

Out of nowhere, Alex—Charlie’s ex from New York City—stood before him, a past resurrected without warning.

Surprise. Surprise.
