Self-Care Strategies for When the Struggle Is Real

Let’s be real. Navigating everyday life is no easy feat, and anyone who claims otherwise is likely not being entirely honest. In the real world, life isn’t always a carefully curated picture-perfect image; more often than not, it’s messy, filled with obstacles, and sometimes downright difficult. As a believer and practitioner of self-care, I find myself grappling with the same challenges that many others face.

During those tough days when financial uncertainties and career insecurities cast long shadows and concerns for the health and well-being of loved ones weigh heavily on our minds, I, too, find taking care of ourselves can feel unattainable.

Like the other day, I experienced a meltdown due to some unexpected events that were beyond my control. As a result, I became resentful towards even the most minor things in my life. I was feeling overwhelmed with emotions and stress, and I found it hard to focus on self-care to alleviate my distress.

So, I understand how difficult it can be to care for yourself during a tough time. But it’s important to remember that you deserve love and kindness, especially during tough moments.

After experiencing a meltdown, I took some time to communicate my feelings with a loved one. This helped me release my negative thoughts and regain my inner calmness. I was then able to start practicing self-care techniques to slowly heal myself.

With that in mind, you have the right to feel frustrated, overwhelmed and angry from time to time. However, just remember that self-care keeps us afloat. Like a flickering candle, it reminds us that even the tiniest light can make a difference.

Here are some practical steps to practice self-care and nurture yourself, no matter how hard things may seem:

  • Start small, celebrate the micro-wins: Forget the hour-long meditation sessions. Aim for five minutes of breathing exercise while your coffee brews, vacuuming your carpet, or folding your laundry. Easy peasy, right?
  • Prioritize basic needs: Before affirmations and journaling, make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating nutritious meals, and staying hydrated. A well-rested, well-fed body is a happier, more resilient body.
  • Get creative with budget-friendly options: Free yoga videos online, free apps like the Nike Training app featuring coaches to share free tips on daily exercise routines, nature walks in your neighborhood, dancing like nobody’s watching in your kitchen – self-care doesn’t need a platinum price tag.
  • Embrace the imperfection: Skipped your meditation? Didn’t make it to the gym? That’s OK! Be kind to yourself. Progress, not perfection, is the name of the game. If you need time to rest your mind and body, just do it without anyone’s permission.
  • Seek support: Don’t try to weather the storm alone. Talk to friends, family, or even a therapist like I did when I had my recent meltdown. Sharing your struggles is a form of self-care; sometimes, a helping hand can make all the difference.

Always remember that caring for yourself is not selfish but crucial for survival. This is your permission to be human, be imperfect, and still prioritize your well-being.
